SMPT Superlatives: FAFBLOG

Faflogo2Incredibly insightful, brilliantly bizarre way, hard to explain is Fafblog.  Fafnir says it best: "This is a good blog. This is the best blog. It is about god and the universe and those horrible screaming monkeys and that time I made a pizza out of an old tire and a can of whip cream. It is the Fafblog."  Yes it is.

Celebrity Brain Pick (Sorta)

Psychoanalysis Character on the Couch is another SMPT take from the UK's The Guardian.  Each week, them zany Brits are "subject[ing] drama's great personalities to psychoanalysis."  But being thems zany Brits that they are, them zany Brits take it one step further.

They aren't just putting the famous on the couch.  No, they have to make it all complicated-like and take an actor playing a celebrity on TV and interview him/her as his/her television persona.  And then they get other actors to play the role of the psychoanalyst but who aren't actually psychoanalysts.  So, for example, this week them same zany Brits have "Prince Charles, appearing in the TV drama Whatever Love Means, being played by Laurence Fox."

It's a bemused crumpety hoot.  Once you get it.  Until then, it's just kinda confusing and makes you think "There goes them zany Brits again... Now where's my tea?"

Thanks to Sohyun "Shorty Spice" Kim for this one.

Extra Extra! Ricky Gervais Podcasts!

GervaisYes yes, we here at SMPT are a bit Ricky Gervais obsessed.  But hey, so is The Guardian!  And so now we listen to Ricky Gervais with buddies Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkington via the Guardian Unlimited on our bits of technology.  Slim and little, large and clunky -- it don't mattah when we've gots the Ricky.

Thanks once again to Gene Perelson for feeding our habit.

"...so we were at this goth club and I moonwalked into someone..."

ListenYou've probably already heard (or overheard, ha ha) of this one before.  But just in case, here's a link to Overheard in New York, a site where eavesdroppers unite and share tidbits of convos they've heard on the streets of this city we compliment with comparisons to large fruit.

- report by SMPT correspondent, Kyoung Kim who the other day overheard someone say "I'm sooooo addicted to coffee.  But I understand if you don't like it -- it's an acquired taste."

Cup o' Politico-flavored Joe

TpmcafemarqueeforTPM Cafe is a smart blend of "politics, ideas, & lots of caffeine" (cafe, blend -- get it?).  Put together by John Micah Marshall, insightful blogger of Talking Points Memo (Talking Points Memo, TPM -- get it?) fame, TPM is a hybrid online magazine/multi-person blog with its regular stream of articles, bloggedy-blog-blog type entries, discussion threads, and laymen forums.  Probably one of the neatest things about TPM is the visiting blogger section.  Last week they had John Edwards, next week ACLU Executive Director Anthony Romero, and the following week is still but an exciting mystery!

Thanks to EiC Gene Perelson for this one.

- report by SMPT correspondent, Kyoung Kim, who did indeed just use the word "neat"

Open the Source of Comedy

Etc www.etc3dot.com or www.OpenSourceComedy.net is the virtual home of the extraordinary New York-based improv group, etc...(Experimental Troupe Comedy), which -- for those of you not in The Know -- Salt Magazine grandmaster Gene Perelson is also a founding member.

Like the troupe itself, the website is not your typical run-of-the-mill what-have-you.  It's a regularly updated blog written by troupe members, with tidbits that range from rants to rages, news commentary to life commentary, as well as real-time discussions and updates on shows that are still "in the works".  Fascinating and surreal glimpse into the disturbing minds and machinations of the etc team.

Pimp My (mp3) Playah

GucciipodTake mp3 software and the revolutionary concept of blogs and you get... audio blogs!  Content made By The People for The People that can be conveniently listened to via the tinily sleek, mega-gigatized, neon-colored, gucci-bag-covered bling bling that is your mp3 player (unless it's built into the body of the ammunition magazine of the Kalashnikov automatic rifle).

Try iPodder.org (named after these things called "ipods". have you heard of them?  do they taste good?) and audio.weblogs.com to start.  Don't be misled by the site name of the former; the audio files can be played on any computer and by any mp3 player.

Thanks to Wookie Crisps for the heads up.
