Procrastinator's Toolbox

More useful than a leprechaun named Lucky

Colorwheel Wellstyled.com is neato mosquito.  For the colorblind or utterly color-uncoordinated, this site generates color combinations and schemes for websites, outfits, interior design, your wedding, your dinner, your ma, your pa.  Very user-friendly, just click on your base color in the color wheel, and voila! it gives you color combos with all the various number codes (for rgb, cmyk, etc.) at your fingertips.  Muah ah ah!

Thanks again to Gene Perelson for the SMPT find.

Thrillian

ThrillIf you're here, then you probably IM.  And if you IM, you probably use more than one program.  And if you use more than one IM program, your desktop is probably cluttered.  And if that's the case, then it's worth checking out Trillian.  Trillian is free (that's what we SMPTers like to hear), consolidates practically all IM programs into its slick shell, makes it so that you only have to log in once for all your IMing needs, and it clears your desktop (whew) which means your IMing habits will be a little less conspicuous and your likelihood of getting fired a little less likely.

Trillian also functions as an electric juicer, but be forewarned that the instructions are in Hmong.

Be Konfabulous

KonfabulousKonfabulator.com is the place to go to supe up your bare bones Honda Civic of a 'puter into a superfly road warrior of cruising wired bling bling.  Think Pimp My Ride meets Download.com and off to Hipsterburg they go.  It won't necessarily attract the honies, but it will make your geeky co-workers go "oooh!"

An Abacus for the Restacus

Abba For those of you have who have something against Western calculators and long division with all that remainder bullshit, this online abacus was made for you.  While overall a pretty neat piece of basic software (this SMPTer is easily amused), be forewarned that the selection of abacus designs between Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Roman, or Russian will disappoint.  These designs only differ slightly in bead color, size, and shape, but then again, maybe that's the point; maybe the creator of this abacus is trying to show us that while our beads may slightly vary, when it comes down to it, we are all divisible by 5.

Snap to the beat of Hypertext

HypertextEastgate's Hypertext on the Web is a virtual library of hypertext (writing/text presented as or accompanying visual art based in a digital format such as flash, powerpoint, etc., and sometimes with sound) fiction pieces and journals.  Some mesmerize, some were beaten with the New Age stick, some have that stereotypical beatniky feel (pretty, yet melancholy, and leaving you wondering whose fault it is that you didn't get it), and all are better than drafting that memo.

- report by SMPT correspondent, Kyoung Kim, who sometimes considers publishing her own dictionary but then tries her hand at it and thinks it's probably not such a good idea

Is that a waning gibbous or are you just happy to see me?

Waningjpg According to the U.S. Naval Observatory Astronomical Applications Department, the phase of the moon in New York City on April 28th, 2005 will be a "waning gibbous with 78% of the Moon's visible disk illuminated."  Find out if yours is waning gibbous by entering your US zip (apologies to the rest of the world) at the site prompt.  Along with the usual info on sunrise and sunset, more intriguing info on the beginning and ending of "civil twilight", sun and moon "transit", moonset, and moonrise are also provided.

Thanks to Heidi Vogt for the link, helping us all get in touch with our inner gibbous.

FREEDOMain names

GeorgemichaelMore free shit comes your way in the way of Free Domain Names.  The service guarantees no ads, no pop-ups, free url redirection and cloaking, and free path forwarding.  The only catch I can see is that you have to provide a link to the main website somewhere on your page and a 2 month inactivity limit.  Know too that they just give you the name and not the server space.  Fair enough.  So take that and that and -- this one's for my mother -- that Mr. The Man.

- report by SMPT correspondent, Kyoung Kim, who disagrees with George Michael because in this instance you don't have to give for what you take

Blog-in-a-Box for FREE (or "You can't do this in China unless you're writing about being pissed at the Japanese")

Wordpress_1It's time to tell The Man to take his monthly payments and registration fees and shove it.  The self-publishing revolution is here.  No longer do you have to deprive piggy of ducets or hit up people you know who know HTML but don't like you and you know they don't like you but you need to be nice to them because they hold the key to your career to published superstardom.

Go to Blogsome for the Whole Shabang or Wordpress for the software (if you already have a server) and editorialize the world ALL FOR FREE.
